Song of an old man

You used me to defend the weak
I was, in Your hands, the watchman on the wall
Standing boldly in the gap. Your word from my mouth was used
to confront and beat back evil
by Your Word
Lives were healed
Marriages were restored and marriage honored
Emptiness was made full, hunger turned to satisfaction, blindness replaced with vision

What am I here?

I remember the worship
The calling of others into sacrificial service
In Your hands, the weak were strengthened to stand

What am I here?

You used me to teach the lost truth to the sick and dead hearts
I was your shofar
The sound roused the sleepers. It awakened those on the verge of death

What am I here?

There were days I stood alone though never without your Word or Spirit
Days when the lonely tears of my wife poured out onto the altar of your temple
Weeks and seasons filled with victory and encouragement

What am I here?

My old eyes looked for evil to stumble and good to rise
Yet the fall of man constantly plays out on the stage before me
I am grateful for the victories won in youth

For now all I see is the defeat caused by my own sin.
